A Hidden Gem That Shouldn’t Be – Hidden, That Is!

Nearly all big cities you’ve lived in offered more good restaurants than you had time, or available calorie allotment, to visit. And yet, most of you managed to find a spot that suited you just fine: the food was more than just good, the atmosphere and service were pleasing and you returned to it as often as any other available.

Victoria has just such a jewel in Saanich, in Broadmead Village (on Royal Oak Drive, just east of 17). The restaurant itself is the Artisan Bistro and it offers much to please: French-leaning menu, breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner, indoor and outdoor seasonal dining, plenty of parking and located in a quiet area of the small mall. What’s not to like?

The menu offers dependable snacks and main courses as well as interesting options: shared plates, salads, pastas, a selection of burgers and House Favourites Beer Battered Fish & Chips and Boneless Fried Chicken.  Intrepid recommends Evening “special” items such as Duck Breast, King Salmon, Bouillabaisse, Manila Clams and Vegetable Gnocchi.

Wondering where to go for an impulsive “Let’s go out for brunch/dinner!” moment, or where to take those surprise guests for a bite to eat or perhaps dessert and wine? Artisan just might fill the bill. Speaking of bills, Artisan’s prices are: very reasonable, even if the exceptional quality were not taken into account.

Reservations: Intrepid, always true to his name, likes to drop in without a reservation, even in the evening. That said, better to plan ahead with a call to 250-590-9333. Intrepid’s experience is that they can usually fit you in on short notice!
