Creating a Better Future for Yourself

Article prepared by Wally Lazaruk, January 2023

We all have unique gifts to create the life we want and in turn to create a better world.

Three Basic Questions:

  1. How do I want to be remembered?
  2. What matters most in my life?
  3. How can I get from where I am now to where I want to be?

1. How do I want to be remembered?

  • Identify key relationships: spouse, family, friends, colleagues and community.
  • Describe how you want to be remembered by each group.

2. What matters most in my life?

  • Identify key areas of your life: good physical and mental health, relationships such as spouse, family and friends, spiritual or inner development, financial management, work and career, play and creativity, community and contribution.
  • Assess the state of each area: flourishing, consistent balance or in decline.

3. How can I get from where I am now to where I want to be?

  • Write a purpose statement for each area, which describes your responsibility and role in that area.
  • Describe how the area would look like when it is flourishing.
  • Identify an inspiring quote that resonates with your envisioned future.
  • Assess your current reality in each area.
  • Commit to specific actions to move from your current reality to your envisioned future.

Implement your plan:

  • Schedule your priorities by blocking time for your commitments
  • Keep your plan alive by reviewing it regularly, tweaking it quarterly and revising it yearly.
