J & J Wonton Noodle House

1012 Fort Street

Restaurant Review by:

The Intrepid Diner has driven past this restaurant numerous times since moving to the best city in Canada. Never once did its rather staid sign entice him to darken its door, even as an increasing number of reviews drove J. & J.’s reputation closer to the 5 out of 5 mark.

Fortunately, Intrepid maintains a forty-year-old tradition of Date Night every Friday evening, and therefore, it was only a matter of time until J. & J. became restaurant of the week!

Before the food gets its just reward, please indulge me with a rapid recitation of how J & J sets the stage for a diner’s visit:

  • Customers receive a warm “welcome” on entering.
  • Once seated, you are immediately served hot, complimentary Chinese tea, to
be refilled constantly during your meal.
  • The default cutlery is chopsticks. Ask if you prefer a fork.
  • Tables are nicely spaced at three meters – Dr. Bonniewould be most pleased
at how her COVID protocols are observed.
  • Your order will arrive in sequence, so no fear of your main course cooling off
while you’re still enjoying your appetizer.
  • Cleanliness? Everything is as clean as a whip – Q.E.D.!

And now a word about the food. The menu includes a wide variety of Cantonese and Szechuan dishes, featuring house-made noodles and local produce, as well as tiny red peppers to warm diners with more delicate palates than Intrepid’s.

Intrepid and his accomplice shared a tasty hot and sour soup, just spicy enough and sufficient for an appetizer for two in a single bowl. Lemon chicken arrived next, a generous portion of breast slices coated with a light breading and garnished with a light lemon sauce.

Should you wish to further impress your partner, suggest a plate of seasonal stir-fried mixed veggies with garlic, perfectly al dente. Pair this with a bowl of rice (yes, even brown rice is available!), a small bowl of which proved to be plenty for two.

Now then, perhaps one other dish to round out your meal. Lest so many choices boggle the minds of both omnivore and the vegetarian, Intrepid recommends the House Special Chow Mein. A wise choice, Sir, if I may say so!

Your server will diplomatically place your bill mid-way between you and your companion. The bottom line for dinner, even with wine or beer, will probably fall somewhere between a reasonable $40 and $60. Given their attention to COVID protocols, conscientious attention to service, and reasonable pricing, your fellow diner will more than likely agree that that you know how to pick a restaurant!

Intrepid was lucky enough to walk right in, but, as lines sometimes wind out the door, reservations are recommended. Intrepid highly recommends J.&J. for an excellent Chinese food experience!
