DESCRIPTION:Our next field trip will be on Thursday\, June 11th with a CRD Watershed Tour to learn about where our water comes from and how it is protected and treated. \n \nThe bus tour follows the flow of our water supply starting at the north end of the Sooke Lake Reservoir to the surrounding forests and Rithet Creek\, the main tributary to Sooke Lake Reservoir.\nDuring the tour\, we will explore the Sooke Lake Dam\, go on a forest walk to explore the ecosystems that support our water supply\, and visit the Goldstream Ultraviolet Treatment plant to learn about the water treatment process that provides Greater Victoria with drinking water. \nWHAT: Tour of Victoria’s protected watershed \nWHEN: Thursday\, June 11th. With a team of 900 professionally trained volunteers operating 29 rescue stations\, we respond to approximately 450 – 500 distress calls each year.\nYou’ll learn who we are\, what we do\, and how we do it.. The presentation will also touch on the model that makes this work possible: highly trained volunteers\, strong partnerships\, and the support of donors and communities.\nAt its heart\, this is a story about people showing up for one another. You will never have seen anything quite like this most interesting and unique exhibit! Phil is the current President at Heritage Acres. \n \nThe event will take place on Thursday\, April 23rd\, at the Oak Bay Rec Centre\, doors opening at 11:30 am. \nAbout the talk:\nPhil will summarize the history of Heritage Acres from its inception in the 1960’s to the present day. He will take you on a virtual train ride and a virtual tour of the 30 acre facility and will describe the significance of some of the buildings. He will then talk about some of the more interesting of 30\,000 or so artifacts in Saanich Historical Artifacts Society collections.\nPhil will discuss the many different ways you can get involved with the activities of this 100% volunteer run organization. He will also cover the planned development and revitalization efforts to ensure the popular community facility is preserved and improved for the benefit of future generations.\n \nMore about Phil…\nPhil Clark is the current President at Saanich Historical Artifacts Society and has been involved with the organization for about eight years. The winner – 25 year old Francis Rattenbury\, went on to become one of Victoria’s most famous architects whose projects include the Empress Hotel and the CPR Steamship Terminal.\nThe Parliament Buildings officially opened in 1898. \n \nWHAT: Tour of the BC Parliament Buildings \nWHEN: Thursday\, April 9th at 10:30 AM. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION:  on “How to Interpret the News” by Dr. Eric Gorham (Club Member) \nSPEAKER:  Our March speaker will be Dr. Eric Gorham\, Professor Emeritus at Quest University\, and a new member of the VRMNC. \n \nThe event will take place on Thursday\, March 26\, at the Oak Bay Rec Centre\, doors opening at 11:30 am. \nAbout the talk:\nEric’s talk will look at biases in the news media.  It will be an analysis of the media going well beyond simple “liberal/conservative” stereotypes; he will argue that there are biases more insidious than ideology that afflict the media.  These biases have helped lead to the decline of traditional news media (the so-called “mainstream media”) and the rise of a new kind of news culture (social media\, blogging\, etc.).  Eric will also discuss where to find a variety of reliable news sources and political ideas and will give hints as to how to critically examine political news stories from both mainstream and non-traditional sources. \nMore about Eric…\nEric Gorham is Professor Emeritus at Quest University\, where he was a founding faculty member and taught political science from 2007 until 2022. DESCRIPTION:2025 VRMNC AGM & SPEAKER LUNCHEON\nOak Bay Recreation Centre\nThursday September 25\nThe Club’s Annual General Meeting and Speaker Luncheon are combined for this event.  See mailout during September for the AGM Agenda or click HERE for Agenda and supporting documents. \n  \nPRESENTATION:  “Navigating the Geopolitical Landscape – The Challenges and Opportunities for Canada” \nThe geopolitical challenges today are seemingly endless. From Washington to Moscow\, Beijing\, Kyiv and beyond\, the world is facing turbulent times. Over the past 18 months\, our speaker\, Dr. Chris Kilford\, travelled to Turkiye\, Taiwan\, South Korea\, Japan and Bhutan on official and semi-official visits\, where he had a chance to sit down with numerous senior officials. Earlier this year\, Chris also spent two weeks in Poland and Latvia\, meeting officials from both countries and visiting members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are training Ukrainian military personnel and leading NATO’s Multinational Brigade in Latvia. During his talk\, Chris will speak about his various visits\, what he learned while on the ground\, what are the key geopolitical issues right now and to come\, and what it all means for Canada and Canadians. \nSPEAKER: \nChris is a member of the national board of the Canadian International Council\, the editor of CIC’s online foreign policy magazine Open Canada\, president of the CIC Victoria branch and a sessional professor with the Canadian Forces College where he teaches courses focused on Canadian foreign and defence policy. He also holds a PhD in history from Queen’s University with a focus on civil-military relations in the developing world. Chris also enjoyed a 36-year career in the Canadian Army. From July 2009 until July 2010\, Chris deployed to Canada’s Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan as the Deputy Military Attaché. On his return to Canada\, he commenced Turkish language training\, after which he was sent to Canada’s Embassy in Ankara as the Canadian Defence Attaché with cross accreditation to Azerbaijan\, Georgia\, and Turkmenistan. He was in this post from July 2011 until July 2014. Chris retired from the military in September 2014 in the rank of Colonel. \n  \nPlease note that the venue is the Sports View Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, 1975 Bee Street\, near the intersection of Fort St and Foul Bay Road. There is substantial free parking at the Rec Centre. Overflow could consider parking in the Save On Foods shopping center or on Goldsmith.
