Bob’s talk will be based on his  latest book\, “Just Say Yes” which is his memoir\, the story of how a kid from a small town\, low income\, alcoholic family and former construction worker became one of Canada’s top science journalists. \n \nThe event will take place on Friday\, November 28 at the Sportsview Lounge of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, 1975 Bee Street\, near the intersection of Fort St and Foul Bay Road. There is substantial free parking at the Rec Centre. Overflow could consider parking in the Save On Foods shopping center or on Goldsmith. In addition to hosting Quirks & Quarks\, the award-winning science program that is heard by 800\,000 people each week\, McDonald is also science correspondent for CBC TV’s The National and host of the children’s series Head’s Up. He was also host of the CBC Children’s series Wonderstruck. He has written and hosted numerous television documentaries and more than 100 educational videos in Canada and the United States.\nAs a writer\, he has authored seven bestselling science books\, and contributed to numerous textbooks\, magazines\, and newspapers (including The Globe and Mail). His latest books are The Future is Now: Solving the climate crisis with current technology and Just Say Yes\, a memoir.\nMcDonald has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of science within Canada. He has been awarded the Michael Smith Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council\, the “Sir Sandford Fleming Medal” from the Royal Canadian Institute\, and the “McNeil Medal” from The Royal Society of Canada. DESCRIPTION:2025 VRMNC AGM & SPEAKER LUNCHEON\nOak Bay Recreation Centre\nThursday September 25\nThe Club’s Annual General Meeting and Speaker Luncheon are combined for this event.  See mailout during September for the AGM Agenda or click HERE for Agenda and supporting documents. \n  \nPRESENTATION:  “Navigating the Geopolitical Landscape – The Challenges and Opportunities for Canada” \nThe geopolitical challenges today are seemingly endless. From Washington to Moscow\, Beijing\, Kyiv and beyond\, the world is facing turbulent times. Over the past 18 months\, our speaker\, Dr. Chris Kilford\, travelled to Turkiye\, Taiwan\, South Korea\, Japan and Bhutan on official and semi-official visits\, where he had a chance to sit down with numerous senior officials. Earlier this year\, Chris also spent two weeks in Poland and Latvia\, meeting officials from both countries and visiting members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are training Ukrainian military personnel and leading NATO’s Multinational Brigade in Latvia. During his talk\, Chris will speak about his various visits\, what he learned while on the ground\, what are the key geopolitical issues right now and to come\, and what it all means for Canada and Canadians. \nSPEAKER: \nChris is a member of the national board of the Canadian International Council\, the editor of CIC’s online foreign policy magazine Open Canada\, president of the CIC Victoria branch and a sessional professor with the Canadian Forces College where he teaches courses focused on Canadian foreign and defence policy. He also holds a PhD in history from Queen’s University with a focus on civil-military relations in the developing world. Chris also enjoyed a 36-year career in the Canadian Army. From July 2009 until July 2010\, Chris deployed to Canada’s Embassy in Kabul\, Afghanistan as the Deputy Military Attaché. On his return to Canada\, he commenced Turkish language training\, after which he was sent to Canada’s Embassy in Ankara as the Canadian Defence Attaché with cross accreditation to Azerbaijan\, Georgia\, and Turkmenistan. He was in this post from July 2011 until July 2014. Chris retired from the military in September 2014 in the rank of Colonel. \n  \nPlease note that the venue is the Sports View Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, 1975 Bee Street\, near the intersection of Fort St and Foul Bay Road. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION:  The Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary: It’s History\, Role and Community and Education Programs \nSPEAKER:  On May 22\, Dr. Cara Gibson\, Executive Director of the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary in Saanich will be the featured speaker will speak about the unique history and role of this Sanctuary. \nThe Sanctuary was established 50 years ago this year. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION:  The Capital Regional District (CRD): It’s Role. Priorities and Challenges \nSPEAKER:  On April 24\, CRD Chair Cliff McNeil-Smith will be the featured speaker. Mr. McNeil-Smith\, who is also Mayor of Sidney\, will speak on the role of the Capital Regional District (CRD)\, its priorities and future challenges. The CRD is the regional government for 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands\, serving about 460\,000 people. The region includes traditional territories of many First Nations where 11 of these Nations hold reserve lands. It provides services that involve regional water supply\, solid waste\, wastewater treatment\, regional parks\, housing\, 911 call answer\, and recreation facilities. For electoral areas outside of municipal boundaries\, the CRD acts as a local government\, providing services and delivering projects at the local level. The CRD\, the Capital Region Health District  and Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC) financial plans combine to form a consolidated budget totaling $891 million. In short\, the CRD plays a crucial governance role in Greater Victoria. \nMr. McNeil-Smith\, owner of Tanner Books in Sidney\, was first elected Mayor of Sidney in 2018 having served as a Councilor since 2009. He was the founder and first President of the Sidney Business Improvement Area\, an association that has focused on making downtown Sidney an attractive shopping and tourist destination. He was elected Chair of the CRD (by other CRD Directors) in November of 2024. \nPlease note that the lunch venue has changed. DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION:  Navigating The Arctic Waters \nSPEAKER:  Our speaker in March will be Nigel Greenwood. Nigel is a retired Rear Admiral in the Royal Canadian Navy who in his “retirement” has taken on the role of Arctic Ice Navigator. Nigel advises masters in ships voyaging through the Northwest Passage and Canadian/Greenlandic Arctic waters. He will talk to us about his Arctic experiences. \nNigel completed his 37 year naval career as Commander of Canada’s Pacific Fleet. His early seagoing experience featured specialization in shipboard air-control and navigation\, with service in Anti-Submarine Warfare tactical development and operations analysis as an exchange officer with the United States Navy. He holds a current Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner\, and is a Fellow of both the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Nautical Institute. He is also licensed as a security consultant and qualified as an Ice Navigator. \nHe is currently Principal Consultant with Greenwood Maritime\, a full service maritime consultancy that offers risk analysis and assessment\, strategic/operational analysis\, emergency management\, leadership and navigational training and ice navigation. \nTICKETS WILL GO ON SALE ON MARCH 3\, 2025 \nTICKETS: Click + sign then click Get Tickets.
