What Have We Learned From The Human Genome

The decoding of the human genome, completed over a decade ago, heralded the beginning of a new era in biomedical research. This presentation explores what our genome has since taught us about ourselves and our place in the biological world. How genomics has contributed to our understanding of the genetic basis of human health and disease is discussed.

Presenter:
Dr. Ed Ishiguro is Professor Emeritus and member of the Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology since 1977 and served 8 years as Department Chair. His research interests are in molecular microbiology with a focus on the basis for antibiotic tolerance in bacteria.

“Legally required to retire in 2006, having reached the age of 65 - when, apparently, you are no longer competent enough to carry out your job description. In reality, I have never retired and have no intention to do so in the immediate future. I currently consider myself a science communicator, attempting to make current science understandable to lay audiences through the UVic Speakers Bureau.”
