About the Speaker: Our May speaker is Bill Riggs Chief Executive Officer, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Bill Riggs joined RCMSAR in March 2020. Bill is a retired Captain (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy with close to 30 years of significant leadership and operational experience along the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, and abroad, including a posting as the Commanding Officer HMCS Vancouver. Along with being a professional mariner, he is noted for being a seasoned, innovative, and strategic leader.
Prior to joining RCMSAR, he led and managed a workforce of over 800 security professionals located at more than 200 sites with Commissionaires Victoria, the Islands and Yukon.
As RCMSAR’s CEO, Bill provides strategic leadership and oversight for the organization, ensuring we remain focused on our mission while operating effectively and responsibly. Collaborating closely with staff, volunteers, and partners, he guides long-term planning, supports operational excellence, and fosters the relationships that make our work possible.
About the talk:
This presentation provides an overview of the essential role volunteer marine search and rescue plays along our coastline and in the Shuswap. With a team of 900 professionally trained volunteers operating 29 rescue stations, we respond to approximately 450 - 500 distress calls each year.
You'll learn who we are, what we do, and how we do it. The presentation will also touch on the model that makes this work possible: highly trained volunteers, strong partnerships, and the support of donors and communities.
At its heart, this is a story about people showing up for one another. It demonstrates the impact of volunteerism, the strength of community-based response, and the meaningful difference RCMSAR volunteers make every day in our communities.
