Message from the President

July 2026 GENERAL NEWSLETTER

"All the VRMNC News that's fit to print"
We're proud to celebrate Canada Day with the many wonderful events around the region, and there are so many things to be proud of as Canadians -- including in the sporting world with Canada's historic success thus far at the World Cup, and Brooke Henderson coming oh-so-close to winning the Women's PGA Championship on the last weekend of June.

Looking at our own club, we have a few annually recurring events. The VRMNC Bridge Tournament took place in mid-June and was a resounding success!

Up next is our annual fun golf tournament in August. We are in serious need of additional golfers to fill out the minimum roster required for this event to proceed!. It would be a shame not to see this event continue. If you haven't already, please be sure to register yourself and guests for the August golf event.

If you are interested in giving back or have a fresh idea for an activity, please reach out to me at president@vrmnc.ca or chat with our Vice President, Tom Glenn. Your involvement is what makes this club a community!

Happy Canada Day!

Doug

Fellowship Events: Committee Members

Based on the Membership Survey there is interest in re-instituting larger Family/ Spousal events that appeal to a broad range of members. The concept would be to create 3 or 4 events per year open to all members to promote our core value and purpose of Fellowship. Ideally these events would have 50 plus attendees.

For longer term members it might sound like the former "Special Events" but this has a slightly different flavour. It may be a luncheon / reception to honour the season. It might be a summer BBQ event to open to members extended families. The Executive have some ideas for possible events and are open to fresh concepts.

Basically the volunteer committee would decide on a Fellowship event and organize the logistics. If you like to organize events or have experience in event organization this is a great position for you to help make a difference in the Club. You'll not be alone, as this will be organized by a small committee of 3 or 4 members

Gentlemen, we currently have 28 golfers signed-up for the upcoming tournament on August 6th. Sorry to say but that is not good enough. We need more and we need you to sign up NOW. We are just five weeks away from the big day and unless we get to 40 golfers, the event will be a no-go.

Friday Coffee Chat Group

Want to solve the world's problems and strategize how to get the Blue Jays going?? A great opportunity to meet some fellow members and enjoy some stimulating conversations over coffee. The Coffee Chat Group meets every Friday at 10:00am on the second floor at Quality Foods in View Royal. (just next to the Victoria General Hospital).

There's ample free parking and a separate quiet space where we meet on the 2nd floor above the deli. Come out and enjoy the comradery and conversation.

We talk about a lot of topics and solve all the world's problems. Given the different backgrounds of everyone the discussions can be very informative. There are also a lot of laughs.

Coordinator: Dennis Aitken email: coffee@vrmnc.ca

Real Money Investment Group

The “ Real Money Group “ meets on the third Thursday at 1:30 at Goward House.
The members annually buy units in our portfolio, which are used to actively trade stocks. The benefit that we all enjoy is the regular exchange of market information and the comradery of fellow “active” Investors – the Bonus is that the value of the units that we own continue to significantly surpass the gains of the S & P !

We are open to new members. If you would like more detailed information on our club, please don’t hesitate to reach out to:

Coordinator: Frank Gibson 780-498-2492

AD-HOC PICKLEBALL

NEW ACTIVITY SIGN-UP

BACKGROUND:
We are a large club scattered across the wide Victoria Region. Several members are already playing Pickleball with their partners or want to try it out or improve their game. Why not have a VRMNC Pickleball Activity?

PLAN:
1) Members and their partners who also want to learn or play sign up for the Activity Email.
2) Anyone on the email list can book an Ad-Hoc court ie Henderson, or Pearkes or outdoors etc, on any day / time and becomes that Game's Host.
3) That Game's Host emails time / location / cost e.g. $5 pp to ahpickleball@vrmnc.ca which auto-forwards to the group.
4) Players who want to play reply (just to the Host) YES
4) When full, that Game's Host re-emails ahpickleball@vrmnc.ca to indicate that the session is full / closed, and lists the players.
5) Play Game.

Tennis

The VRMNC Tennis Group are enjoying summers longer days and pleasant weather for mostly outdoor tennis.

Each of our foursomes has a member designated as LEAD who is responsible when and where his team is to play and is now responsible for forecasting the weather several days in the future. We had two four man teams scheduled to play the last Monday of June. One was predicting good weather and the other inclement weather. <grin>

Indoor courts must be reserved, booked and paid for several days in advance at the modest cost of seven dollars per player. The LEAD responsibility is shared around fairly but also requires the LEAD to collect fees and pass them on to the annual funder.
Sounds complex but actually really works very well.

We have nineteen members presently, with three unavailable for various reasons, so there is room for additional players who wish to enjoy great exercise, social coffee breaks and potentially extended lifetimes.

We also have the use of several fine outdoor courts at no cost with excellent nearby washrooms and parking as well.

Tennis is an inexpensive sport with good quality racquets costing less than $200 and lasting indefinitely, and balls are often provided by other players.

If you would just like to have a look, play a short game, or get more detail to do with Newcomers tennis call

BRIDGE GROUPS

New Members Welcome

A Huge Success - June 15th - VRMNC Annual Bridge Tournament

On a HOT sunny afternoon, 25 of the members from the four active VRMNC Social Bridge Clubs held its annual tournament. This annual get-together allows everyone to meet players from the other groups; some players whom we would otherwise never meet.

We played 5 rounds over 2 1/2 hours. After each round, players were assigned to new partners at new tables; so, everyone got to spend time with almost everyone. Play was followed by a dinner.

Prizes were given to those with the top scores ... and to one who was the most point challenged. The oldest member, who recently turned 92, took first place; a repeat of his 2024 performance. Some truth to "Age and treachery will always beat youth and enthusiasm".

A huge THANK-YOU to Colin Cassie (and his support team) for orchestrating this FUN get-together, and to Ron Semkow for getting the group access to the Foxborough Hills Community Recreation Centre (an awesome location).

Submitted by Keith Beange, VRMNC Bridge Groups' Coordinator.

Bridge Group: The Unconventionals

Our bridge group, The Unconventionals, continues to get together at a member's home on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month.

Sometimes we do not have enough for 2 tables but always at least one and the host provides some kind of snack or refreshment.

We have a number of regular players each of whom hosts on a semiannual basis. We also have a number of spares to fill in. We play a very basic bridge but have knowledge of basic conventions.

We welcome new players either as regulars or as spares.

Coordinator Dave Nicholds <jdnicholds@gmail.com>

Social Bridge Groups

Players Urgently Needed!

Interested in playing Social/Progressive Bridge weekly? … or participating occasionally as a spare?

There are currently 3 groups respectively playing on Monday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday afternoons. Each group consists of a core group of 8 to 10 players who meet on a regular schedule. Frequently core group players are not able to play on a given night so a list of spares is maintained for all groups and players to call upon.

Beginners are welcome but some knowledge of the game and playing experience are required. We, in general, follow Standard American bidding conventions and ACBL contract bridge rules. That said, the emphasis is on fellowship and fun, not competition.

Please contact the Activity Coordinator, Keith Beange.

The Appie Gang

The Appie Gang was at it again on June 25th at the home of Ian & Arlene Weatherdon!

While we would loved to have enjoyed weather like we had earlier in the week, we did manage to get outside under the protection of the beautiful, large covered porch. And the view to the gardens never disappoints. Thanks so much to our hosts for opening their home to us!

The appies were simply delicious and numerous - lots of variety on the table for every palate. And thanks to those who brought desserts - what a great finish to what is typically a fabulous meal. It was nice to have our newest member and spouse join us. Ron and Cristy - we loved your appie and hope you enjoyed your time with the gang.

Next month is being hosted by me and my wife, Karen. I will send out details soon.

As announced last evening, 2026 marks 4 years for me in the role of Coordinator for the Appie Gang. I think it is time for a new volunteer to take over and bring some new energy/ideas to the group. Of course, I am willing to train and onboard whoever wants to jump in. The monthly involvement is pretty straight-forward and you get the privilege of attending every month if you choose. This is a great way to build your network and make friends besides giving back to the men’s club. Reach out to me if you are interested. I hope to see several of you in July.

Happy Canada Day,

The Bon Vivants

The Bons Vivants group was created for the men who like to cook and share food with others and their spouses. We don’t take ourselves seriously. We simply enjoy the camaraderie and the experience of pretending one evening each month that we run a three star Michelin restaurant. Well, okay, make that a two star Michelin restaurant.

The group dinners are on the second Thursday of every month. Participants take turns to host. The host picks a theme and prepares the main course. He then assigns other courses or dishes to the others. Each participant also provides a paired wine. What better way is there to have a lovely evening with friends and spouses?

If you want to join, simply email the coordinator. There is always room at the table for two more plates!

Bon appétit.

Field Trips

On Thursday, June 11th, our group of 16 joined a Capital Regional District Watershed Tour, which is a 6-hour bus tour to learn about where our water comes from and how it is protected and treated.

It was an absolutely perfect day! The tour followed the flow of our water supply starting at the north end of the Sooke Lake Reservoir to the surrounding forests and Rithet Creek, the main tributary to Sooke Lake Reservoir.

During the tour, we went on a forest walk to explore the ecosystems that support our water supply, we had a picnic on the Sooke Lake Dam and we visited the Goldstream Ultraviolet Treatment Plant to learn about the water treatment process that provides Greater Victoria with drinking water. Everyone agreed it was a highly interesting and entertaining excursion.

We have a couple more summer field trips planned as follows: On Thursday, July 2nd, we will be taking in a baseball game at Royal Athletic Park where the Victoria Harbourcats will be taking on the visiting Nanaimo NightOwls. Game time is 6:35 p.m. SOLD OUT

On Thursday, July 30th we will be taking in another baseball game at Royal Athletic Park where the Victoria Harbourcats will be hosting the Port Angeles Lefties. Game time is 6:35 p.m. Please watch your inbox for the registration emails for these events.

Sunday Hike and Pub for Members / Couples

Our June adventure had us starting at Durrance Lake and climbing up to the spectacular views of Finlayson Arm from Partridge Hill. Afterwards a relaxing lunch at Fireside Grill.

Planned for July 11th ... We are off to Sidney Island! Owing to the organizing-efforts of our excursion leaders Nick and Sylvie Seiersen. After a few hours enjoying the island we return to Sidney for a lunch at Jack's on the Water.

This Activity is not just for couples; individual VRMNC members are absolutely welcome. If you would like to be on the mailing list, contact Greg Bosecker

VRMNC History Book Club

On June 10 Roger Fox led a discussion of Stephen R. Bown’s book, Roald Amundsen: The Last Viking. Roald Amundsen has been described as the greatest polar explorer of all time. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the Northwest Passage, the North Pole, the Northeast Passage and the South Pole remained shrouded in mystery. Yet, in the space of the next two decades Amundsen had explored them all. Bown's book recounts these many exploits in vivid detail.

Roger asked us to consider the sources of Amundsen's success where others, like the British explorer Robert Scott, had failed. We noted that Amundsen was a meticulous planner who learned from the native Inuit and from previous explorers. This taught him the importance of traveling by dog sled, wearing fur clothing, and using skis - all crucial to survival. He was also physically tough and seemed to relish the challenge of polar adventure.

Amundsen was a restless man of action who had to learn to become an entertainer in order to raise money to finance his explorations. His lecture tours attracted huge crowds, especially in the United States. In his native Norway he was a national hero. He was a complicated man, and a rugged individual who kept a team of loyal Norwegian colleagues together over the years. He also ran into financial difficulties and conflicts in his later years. Amundsen died in 1928 in a failed attempt to rescue the survivors of an Italian airship near Spitzbergen off northern Norway. He was 55 years old.

Unanimously book club members rated The Last Viking to be an informative and riveting adventure story.
Next Up:
Our next meeting is scheduled for July 29 when Roger Love will present Freedom Fighter: John Diefenbaker's Battle for Canadian Liberties and Independence, a 2025 book by Bob Plamondon.

· Clear by Carys Davies

Tuesday Hikers

Tuesday hikes begin at 9:00 a.m. and are approximately three hours in duration. The number of participants for our June hikes ranged from 8 to 15.

We had excellent hiking weather throughout the month. Hikes included a wide variety of settings at the following locations:

The perimeter trail around Portland Island (the island once given to Princess Margaret) which involved a 30 minute boat ride from Canoe Road marina to the island - led by Scott White

Francis King Regional Park which included a stop at Heritage Grove with its magnificent old-growth Douglas fir trees that are approximately 500 years old, making them some of the tallest in the region - led by Keith Knowles

Plateau Peak and Mt. Braden in Sooke Hills Wilderness Park, a moderately challenging hike with panorama views - led by Frank Gibson

Coppermine trail and Coast trail with great views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, including a stop at beautiful Iron Mine Bay - led by Graham Wetter

Mount Douglas Park, including both Little Mt. Doug and Big Mt. Doug, as well as the surrounding mixed wood Douglas fir/big leaf maple forest. - led by Keith Knowles

Monday Ramblers

The Monday ramblers group continue to enjoy weekly hikes around greater Victoria throughout June. Over the past month our hikes have included our first visit to Witty’s Lagoon in some time, the trail reopened after repairs due to significant landslides. The Witty’s lagoon hike was led by Bruce Thompson.

Ted Mathie led a hike to the Matheson Lake viewpoint; Terry Carson through Mystic Vale, Finerty gardens and Mount Tolmie; and Rolf Holtzhuter to the Metchosin Wilderness Park.

We also enjoyed a special event where Rick Mitchel hosted a lunch after leading the group on a new hike including Gordon Head beaches at the lowest tide of the year and nearby park trails.

Each week, our hikes are led by various volunteers, coordinated by Ted Mathie (mathie@uregina.ca, if you wish to join our activity). Typically we hike for 2 to 2.5 hrs, about eight km distance, starting out at 09:30 Mondays. An invitation is prepared by the volunteer leader three days ahead of each hike and sent to the whole ramblers mailing list. The invitation includes the exact meeting location and some advice about the hike. Those who want to participate register with the leader, who normally follows up the evening before the hike with a note listing those who have registered, in case anyone wants to sort out some car pooling for themselves.

Enjoy Life!

Article Submitted by Wally Lazaruk

To enjoy life, engage in activities that create happiness, contentment and fulfillment. Example activities include:

1. Enjoying your senses
  • Be aware of your breath, inhaling fully and enjoying the relaxation as you exhale.
  • See something beautiful around you.
  • Smell the fresh air on your walks.
  • Listen to music to relax or to be inspired.
  • Feel pleasure when you taste something you like.
  • Touch the flower or other object to have a greater sense of its nature.
2. Be grateful
  • Recognize the goodness in your life and express appreciation for what you have received.
  • Be grateful for positive memories, the present moment and the hope for good things in the future.
  • Note in writing things for which you are grateful: e.g. family, health, relationships, finances, service to community, nature around you and a kind word.
  • Express gratitude verbally or in writing to a person who’s been helpful to you.
  • Take a gratitude walk in nature, enjoying the trees, forests, birds and animals.
3. Celebrate
  • Celebrate an event such as a birthday, an anniversary or the completion of a project.
4. Single-task
  • Do one thing at a time and give your entire attention to the task for maximum enjoyment.
5. Slow down
  • Take time to enjoy the pleasurable experiences in your day without rushing.
6. Share the moment
  • Invite someone else to share an activity with you such as a walk, a presentation or a sunset.
7. Simplify
  • Get rid of extra mental and physical clutter to create more time for what matters most to you: e.g. unsubscribe from unnecessary emails, declutter your closet, write next day’s to-do list before bed, and spend less time on social media.
8. Set goals and plan new activities
  • Set new monthly goals and undertake new challenges and hobbies.
9. Reminisce
  • Reminisce about pleasurable events down memory lane and share them with loved ones.
10. Anticipate
  • Appreciate pleasurable occasions in the future: e.g. a visit with a friend or cultural event.
11. Nurture your relationships
  • Value and care for people, taking time to listen, to converse and to share.
  • Volunteer for causes of interest to you and which help others live better lives.
12. Ask yourself:
  • What are some experiences in my daily life that I already find enjoyable?
  • What new experiences can I create to increase my enjoyment each day?
13. Enrich and internalize
  • Enrich an enjoyable experience by staying with it for a breath or longer, to feel it in your body and to be aware of what's rewarding about it.
  • Motivate yourself to do something by focusing on what is enjoyable and rewarding about it.
14 Recognize blockages to enjoyment and release them
  • Recognize blockages such as the fear of letting your guard down, criticism by others or conditioning that it is not appropriate for you to enjoy something.
  • Strive to let go of any obstacles and allow yourself to enjoy the moment.
Overall, life enjoyment comes from staying engaged in life, striving to do your best, being optimistic, searching for solutions and helping others.

The benefits of enjoying life include a strengthened immune system, lowering of stress motivation to act and connection with others. Enjoyment is a form of caring for yourself and caring for others.

“Nurturing your own development isn’t selfish. It’s actually a great gift to other people.”
— Rick Hanson, Ph.D.
