Historic Pub Walk on March 12th

On Thursday, March 12th we were again joined with Dave Mason of Come See Victoria, for his Historic Pub Walk. Downtown Victoria has a wonderful collection of vibrant pubs in some of the most notable heritage buildings in the city. On this pub walk, our group got a sense of how these wonderful old buildings and the people associated with them have shaped the City of Victoria, augmented with lots of old photos. We visited a few "Saloons" of the day and an Opium Den... legal for a while but not any more. . We learned that the “Bard” was not Shakespeare, but Robert Service, the legendary Canadian poet, who worked for the Bank of Commerce in this branch in the early 1900s. Dave regaled us with a memorable no-notes recitation of “The Cremation of Sam McGee” while we enjoyed our beverages. (I would also add a shameless plug for Dave’s new book entitled “Old Town Victoria – Walk Through Time”. It is a meticulously researched and well-organized history guide book that is available at local bookstores or on-line at www.comeseevictoria.comAll while sampling beers from the multitude of craft breweries and now brew pubs for which Victoria has become renowned.

Victoria Royals vs the Everett Silvertips

on St. Patrick’s Day !!

On Tuesday, March 17th, a group of six members watched the Victoria Royals host the Everett Silvertips at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena. While the home side put up a strong effort, the heavily favoured Silvertips prevailed by a score of 5-2 and the Royals slim chance for a playoff berth evaporated. Nonetheless, a very exciting game and we look forward to next season.

TALLY
HOOOOOO
On Saturday, May 9th, we will be joining the Tally-Ho Farm Tour. Tally-Ho’s majestic draft horses have captivated visitors to Victoria for 120 years with carriage tours of James Bay and the Inner Harbour. Twice each year, the owners provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of their private horse farm in Saanichton. We will spend a morning surrounded by these magnificent horses, experiencing their calming energy, affectionate nature, and playful personalities. We will learn about their care and specialized needs, including a farrier demonstration of hot shoeing. (Limited to 15 people.)

Whales

On Wednesday, May 27th, we will be going on a Zodiac Whale Watching adventure with Prince of Whales, departing from the Inner Harbour. We’ll suit up in Mustang Survival Suits and board a 12-passenger Zodiac for an intimate, adrenaline-pumping whale-watching adventure in search of orcas and humpbacks. (Limited to 12 people.)

Waterworks

Finally, on Thursday, June 11th, we will be joining a CRD Watershed Tour, a 5.5-hour tour to learn about where our water comes from and how it is protected and treated. The tour follows the flow of our water supply starting at the north end of the Sooke Lake Reservoir to the surrounding forests and Rithet Creek, the main tributary to Sooke Lake Reservoir. During the tour, we will explore the Sooke Lake Dam, go on a forest walk to explore the ecosystems that support our water supply, and visit the Goldstream Ultraviolet Treatment plant to learn about the water treatment process that provides Greater Victoria with drinking water. (Limited to 18 people.)
