"All the VRMNC News that's fit to print"

Welcome to our newest members! We are thrilled to have you as part of the Victoria Region Men's and Newcomers Club. With the wide variety of activities available to members, I’m confident you will find something that suits your interests. I encourage you to participate. It is the easiest way to shift from “newcomer” to “regular”.
May is one of my favourite months in Victoria. Daylight hours are lenthening, temperatures are warming, rainy days are fewer, and Mother Nature is in full bloom! The Club’s outdoor activities will be in full gear.
Our Club thrives because of the energy and dedication of our members. To keep our wide range of activities running smoothly, we are always looking for a few more helping hands. Please see the opportunity noted below.
If you are interested in giving back or have a fresh idea for an activity, please reach out to me at president@vrmnc.ca or chat with our Vice President, Tom Glenn. Your involvement is what makes this club a community!

Fellowship Events: Committee Members
Based on the Membership Survey there is interest in re-instituting larger Family/ Spousal events that appeal to a broad range of members. The concept would be to create 3 or 4 events per year open to all members to promote our core value and purpose of Fellowship. Ideally these events would have 50 plus attendees.
For longer term members it might sound like the former "Special Events" but this has a slightly different flavour. It may be a luncheon / reception to honour the season. It might be a summer BBQ event to open to members extended families. The Executive have some ideas for possible events and are open to fresh concepts.
Basically the volunteer committee would decide on a Fellowship event and organize the logistics. If you like to organize events or have experience in event organization this is a great position for you to help make a difference in the Club. You'll not be alone, as this will be organized by a small committee of 3 or 4 members

A Possible New Group for VRMNC: Grief Support
Grief is something we will all encounter, but our experience will be deeply personal. When one loses one’s life partner either unexpectedly or after a protracted illness, grief will surely follow, perhaps immediately, perhaps delayed or perhaps continuous.
No matter the circumstances, family, friends and neighbours will want to help, but often are not sure how. Sometimes, there is no family close by.
Despite offers of help and support, the surviving partner can feel very alone. If nothing else, the home feels empty. Suddenly you go to bed alone, you eat meals alone, you go to a concert alone.
My experience has taught me that people who have gone down the same road can provide the best support. Although experiences may differ, they do understand what you are going through. They will be good listeners and are well placed to provide both practical and emotional support. Lastly, you don’t know if you are going to need such a group until you experience that loss.
I am proposing a “closed group” open to members who have lost their spouse or partner in the recent past. The membership would therefore fluctuate. However, I would suggest a minimum of 4 participants.

If you would like to participate in such a group please contact Norm Leslie at nwleslie@mac.com

Tennis
Newcomers tennis played its final indoor booking on Friday May 1st and is now back to outdoors amid our recent excellent weather.
Our new schedule moves to three days rather than the previous two...now Monday, Thursday and Friday, driven by the popularity of games on Friday that we experienced over last winters session.
All of our group are back now save for Peter Winter from South Africa. He is expected to return in June.
We are still playing for ninety minutes, with three rotations allowing changes in partners, and allowing for an occasional win when you get the group star player!
Good fun for all and a chance to stay fit.
Still welcoming new players to join us in great exercise and interesting coffee breaks following the bi weekly games.

Speakers Luncheons
The April speaker lunch featured Phil Clark, President of the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society. The Society operates Heritage Acres, a 30 acre site just off the Pat Bay Highway at 7321 Lochside Drive. Heritage Acres is also home to the Vancouver Island Model Engineers, model railway enthusiasts who operate tracks that run through the grounds on appointed days. Phil introduced the lunch group to the work of the Society, which maintains a living history site dedicated to preserving Vancouver Island's rural and industrial heritage. It features over 30,000 artifacts, including historic buildings, farming equipment, and steam engines, along with forested trails and a miniature railway. It also features a pioneer chapel, a 1913 schoolhouse, working blacksmith shop, sawmill, and a collection of antique tractors. Heritage Acres is operated exclusively by volunteers and gets no government grants. Admission is deliberately kept low, by donation. The Club is considering organizing a field trip to Heritage Acres later in the year.

Bridge Group: The Unconventionals
Our bridge group, The Unconventionals, Continue to get together at a member's home on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month.
Sometimes we do not have enough for 2 tables but always at least one and the host provides some kind of snack or refreshment.
We have a number of regular players each of whom would host on a semiannual basis. We also have a number of spares to fill in. We play a very basic bridge but have knowledge of basic conventions.
We welcome new players either as regulars or as spares
Social Bridge Groups
Players Urgently Needed!
Interested in playing Social/Progressive Bridge weekly? … or participating occasionally as a spare?
There are currently 3 groups respectively playing on Monday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday afternoons. Each group consists of a core group of 8 to 10 players who meet on a regular schedule. Frequently core group players are not able to play on a given night so a list of spares is maintained for all groups and players to call upon.
Beginners are welcome but some knowledge of the game and playing experience are required. We, in general, follow Standard American bidding conventions and ACBL contract bridge rules. That said, the emphasis is on fellowship and fun, not competition.

Appy Gang
Thanks to a splendid turnout at the end of April we had a wonderful time. There were 25 members/spouses/partners in attendance and the gang listened when I said “step up your creativity” with the appies. We had a most delicious assortment of appies and desserts
It seems everyone had a lovely time over the two hours. We owe much appreciation to our hosts, Dennis and Laura, who put in a solid effort to make the evening a success. Thanks so much for opening your home to all of us.
Next month the Appie event will be held on Thursday, May 28th and hosted by Darryl and Jean Owens. Details will be available shortly.
Thanks to all our members for really making the Appie Gang an attractive way for newcomers to get connected.
Hope to see many of you next month.

Field Trips
On Thursday, April 9th a group of 13 of us participated in a most interesting tour of the Parliament Buildings, home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Our tour guide did a fabulous job of providing us with a history of the buildings and some of the personalities of past lawmakers. The tour was followed by a terrific lunch in the Parliamentary Dining Room, where we were seated in a private room and enjoyed exceptional service.
Unfortunately, the road trip to Maple Bay and the Hand of Man – Museum of Natural History, Cultural Arts & Conservation, originally scheduled for April 30th, had to be cancelled due to insufficient interest. We may try to reschedule this field trip for the fall and try again.
Looking ahead, we have a couple of field trips in the hopper. On Saturday, May 9th, we will be joining the Tally-Ho Farm Tour. Tally-Ho’s majestic draft horses have captivated visitors to Victoria for 120 years with carriage tours of James Bay and the Inner Harbour. Twice each year, the owners provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of their private horse farm in Saanichton.
We will spend a morning surrounded by these magnificent horses, experiencing their calming energy, affectionate nature, and playful personalities. We will learn about their care and specialized needs, including a farrier demonstration of hot shoeing. (Limited to 15 people)
On Wednesday, May 27th, we will be going on a Zodiac Whale Watching adventure with Prince of Whales, departing from the Inner Harbour. We’ll suit up in Mustang Survival Suits and board a 12-passenger Zodiac for an intimate, adrenaline-pumping whale-watching adventure in search of orcas and humpbacks. (Limited to 12 people)
And finally, on Thursday, June 11th, we will be joining a CRD Watershed Tour, a 5.5-hour tour to learn about where our water comes from and how it is protected and treated. The tour follows the flow of our water supply starting at the north end of the Sooke Lake Reservoir to the surrounding forests and Rithet Creek, the main tributary to Sooke Lake Reservoir. During the tour, we will explore the Sooke Lake Dam, go on a forest walk to explore the ecosystems that support our water supply, and visit the Goldstream Ultraviolet Treatment plant to learn about the water treatment process that provides Greater Victoria with drinking water. (Limited to 18 people.)

Vancouver Island a Haven for Artists
Article, and artwork below, submitted by VRMNC member James Worton
Since joining the VRMNC in 2018, my membership has opened doors to many new experiences, friendships and interests. While attending the April 2026 speakers’ luncheon, “Heritage Acres, Past, Present and Future”, my luncheon table expressed appreciation for the variety of club activities, the diversity of talents and passions of our members.
Since retiring, one of my “passions” has been sketching and painting natural and cultural landscapes. We are fortunate that British Columbia features breathtaking scenery for everyone to enjoy. As an amateur artist, I am taking every opportunity to sketch these beautiful Victoria Regional landscapes. My luncheon friends suggested I submit a couple of sketches from the Victoria area (see below).
There are many talented artists on the island (refer to the excerpt from the Vancouver Island Free Daily below) and perhaps my submission will encourage other members to submit their artwork in future Newsletters for our membership to enjoy.
‘Victoria has been named the most vibrant city in the country for the arts, topping a new national index that links cultural activity with economic strength. “Victoria has consistently been home to more artists per capita than the rest of Canada, so I suppose this new ranking helps recognize the breadth of activity taking shape here,” said Kegan McFadden, executive director of the Victoria Arts Council.
The Arts Vibrancy Index, released Feb. 13 by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Business Data Lab, compares 22 census metropolitan areas using a mix of arts and economic indicators, including jobs, revenue, tourism and business sentiment.
Victoria ranked first overall, ahead of Kelowna in second and Québec City in third. Vancouver placed fifth, meaning British Columbia cities dominate the top tier of the rankings.
Chris Gilpin, arts and culture manager with the Capital Regional District, said the results highlight Victoria’s strong concentration of artists and audiences relative to its size. “What it really tells us is that the saturation of arts vibrancy in Victoria, per capita, is higher than any other city measured in Canada,” he said.’

VRMNC History Book Club
On April 8 the History Book Club met to discuss the Destroyer of Worlds: The Deep History of the Nuclear Age by Frank Close, published in 2025.
In presenting the book Ted Mathie pointed out that the author is a well known theoretical physicist who has often written to help the general public understand sophisticated physics topics. In this case he tackled the thorny topic of nuclear weapons by going back to the beginning of nuclear physics when the energy locked in the nuclei of atoms was first realized through the phenomena of various natural decays and reactions.
As a physicist himself, Ted tried to clear up some of the misconceptions people often develop upon their first acquaintance with nuclear physics. Misconceptions like appreciating that energy from reactions is not so much due the mass of the nuclei involved as with the difference in mass of nuclei before and after the reaction.
The group went through an interesting and detailed discussion of the personalities and brilliance of the scientists who unlocked the secrets of nuclear energy during the 19th and 20th centuries. Our wide-ranging conversation concluded with the sobering reality that the atomic energy released in the atomic fission weapons such as those used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki pales in relation to the massive nuclear energy released in subsequent hydrogen fusion weapons.
At our next meeting on May 13 Michael Randerson will lead a discussion of Agent Sonya: The Spy Next Door, by Ben MacIntyre.

We had variable weather for our Tuesday hikes throughout April. Our hike to McKenzie Lake was a wet one, with persistent rain for much of the hike. Our hikes included a wide variety of settings at the following locations:
The former Dunsmuir Lodge green space and John Dean Park, starting from Cresswell Road - led by Keith Knowles
Upper Thetis Lake to McKenzie Lake in Thetis Lake Regional Park, starting from Thetis main parking lot - led by Keith Knowles
Squalys Reach & McKenzie Byte in Gowland Todd Provincial Park, starting from Ross Durance parking lot - led by Rick Jess

The Monday ramblers group continue to enjoy weekly hikes around greater Victoria. Over the past month our hikes have included Oakhaven Park led by Hugh Stephens, James Bay led by Geoff Owen, Hyacinth Park led by Colin Livingston and Latoria Creek/ Havenwood Parks led by Ted Mathie.
Each week, our hikes are led by various volunteers, coordinated by Ted Mathie (mathie@uregina.ca, if you wish to join our activity). Typically we hike for 2 to 2.5 hrs, about eight km distance, starting out at 09:30 Mondays.
An invitation is prepared by the volunteer leader three days ahead of each hike and sent to the whole Ramblers mailing list. The invitation includes the exact meeting location and some advice about the hike.
Those who want to participate register with the leader, who normally follows up the evening before the hike with a note listing those who have registered, in case anyone wants to sort out some car pooling for themselves.

Wine Making Group
Greetings to the wine making group!
The last wine bottling session was back in early August 2024. Since then I have taken on the quest to become the next Darth (Czypyha) Vader. I have had my right knee and my right shoulder replaced and am now waiting for the call to have my left knee replaced. I hope that will be done in late September. During the down time, my wine stock has depleted to approximately 120 bottles. (I am drinking wine bottled in 2023). If anyone from the group is interested in starting a new batch, so am I.
The winery (Blachard Street Winery) is having a 30th Anniversary sale at this time. We can pick and chose which wines we would like to make. They have the RQ 2026 series (4 red & 1 white) 8 week kits on special price, comes to about $8.50 a bottle.
The winery had to dispose of their wine barrels, but I was told that they can add extra oak and age the wine for 6 months (if we so desire) and it would be ready to bottle before Christmas. I am available on Wednesday’s, May 6th or 13th. Please let me know asap so we can start the process.
New members are more than welcome to participate. I can answer any question you may have.

Greetings to all snooker & Uky billiard players.

The summer season is upon us and some of our regular players have other activities to occupy their Tuesday and Friday’s.

Also, asking the existing players to invite friends that may be interested in playing.
The same invitation is being extended to anyone interested in playing Ukrainian Billiards on Friday’s.
We play at the Pro-Patria Legion on the corner of Jutland and Gorge. Start time is 11:00am sharp. We play for 2 hours and everyone is welcome to stay for lunch or a libation afterwards (not mandatory, but it is a good time to boast about some of your excellent plays).

Stay Calm in Challenging Times
Article Submitted by Wally Lazaruk
Stay calm in CHALLENGING TIMES
-
Notice that you are alright now
-
-
-
Calm is about developing more emotional balance so you can stay steady and centred, even when life is challenging.
You can learn to stay calm by noticing that you are alright in this moment, by feeling safe, cooling anger, and staying relaxed. These skills will help you go through life keeping an eye on threats and difficulties without being unnecessarily anxious or stressed.
1. Notice that you are alright now
When you feel stressed, threatened, or anxious, find a place inside you that feels calm and strong. You have enough air to breathe. Your heart is still beating. Let go of unnecessary worries and non-essential tension. Recognize that in this moment, you are basically alright. Feel reassured and confident as you move forward in your life.
2. Feel Safe
You may over-estimate threats and under-estimate opportunities. You are more able to cope than you give yourself credit for. You can learn to be present in your body while relaxing and letting go of unneeded fears. You can feel calm, centered, and strong.
Claim your place: “This is where I am.” “I am taking my place here.”
Let go of worries, let go of anxieties. Meditate on the feelings of peacefulness and calmness. Feel at peace, strong and awake at the core of your being.
3. Cool Anger
Anger is often at work in the back of the mind. Recognizing anger’s presence enables you to control it rather than it controlling you. Let go of needless fear and feel strong and open-hearted, so you are better able to manage angry feelings, thoughts, and desires.
4. Relax
Being able to relax your body is a way to reset and start feeling better. You can practice whole-body relaxation, which will help you stay calm and relaxed in an ongoing way – even when you’re dealing with difficulties.
You can learn to relax by:
-
Extending the exhalation – counting softly to make your exhalation longer than your inhalation.
-
Relaxing tension – imagine breathing into areas in your body that are particularly tense. Imagine that light or energy is flowing through your body and carrying tension away.
-
Moving – trying gentle movement exercises such as yoga or tai chi or a routine activity and do it in a very calm and easygoing way while staying in touch with your body.
Box breathing: Take a deep breath in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and then hold your breath for another 4 seconds. Repeat this cycle for a few minutes.
5-4-3-2-1 exercise: Look around and identify five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This exercise can help you to be calmer and more present in this moment.
“Calm your mind. Life becomes much easier when you keep your mind at peace.” —Unknown
