New Members’ Suggestions for Improvement

Summary of responses from new Members to questionnaire circulated by Wally Lazuruk.

  1. Luncheons
    1. Use calendar in VMNC website to advertise luncheons.
    2. Implement random seating selection all luncheons: e.g. pick a card at every luncheon.
    3. Broaden the scope of dining out to include breakfast/brunch in selected restaurants in region: e.g. Tonollis Deli, Jam Cafe, Village.
    4. Consider telephone calls for increasing participation at luncheons.
    5. Consider other luncheon locations if parking is an issue at a location.
    6. Seat executive members at each table to facilitate conversations about the VMNC.
    7. Include wives/partners in some dining out events.
  2. Speaker Presentations
    1. Implement a speakers’ bureau which includes VMNC members.
    2. Involve new members in making speaker introductions and thanking speakers to recognize the new member component of the VMNC.
  3. Communications
    1. Use website, newsletter and Facebook as major vehicles for club information.
    2. Use more e-mail contact before events.
    3. Continue the Club Contact initiative in which a volunteer VMNC member answers questions and provides information to new members about the Club and the region.
    4. Request that activity coordinators provide timely responses to new member inquiries.
    5. Improve website: FAQs, use calendar, use event photos, include suggestions section, executive responsibilities, contact and meet with other websites’ webmasters to identify and incorporate best practices from other sites: e.g.www.victoriawomensnewcomers.com
    6. Determine which parts of the Club website will be open to the public (as a recruiting tool) and which will be restricted to members only.  Review privacy or security issues regarding personal information.
  4. Activities
    1. Send information about new member interests to coordinators of specific activities.
    2. Prepare a club strategy for starting new activities (e.g. poker) or new sections of existing activities: e.g. bridge, book club.
    3. Determine critical mass required for certain activities: e.g. 14 members for social duplicate bridge?
  5. Special Events
    1. Continue to organize events that include partners/spouses.
    2. Consider initiatives with women’s newcomers clubs: e.g. organize joint events.
    3. Encourage members to suggest new activities to the Director -Special Events.
    4. Recruitment and Retention
    5. Consider organizing two sessions per year entitled “Be a Friend… Bring a Friend.”
  6. Organizational Leadership
    1. Consider some form of leadership training for members who may wish to serve on the executive.
