The Victoria Restaurant That Isn’t!
At least one dictionary defines a restaurant as ”a place where people pay to sit and eat meals that are cooked and served on the premises”. Although this definition has morphed considerably over the past four decades, it serves well to describe Foo Asian Street Food, a small take-out at the corner of Blanshard and Yates. Owing to COVID-19 regulations, the resto currently offers pre-order and takeout only. However, limited indoor and patio seating should be available once (if ever) things get back to normal.

Foo consistently serves up the most delicious Asian food I’ve tasted! In addition to a dozen or so wonderful noodle dishes, they also offer an array of vegetable sides, including a crisp grated papaya salad and Togarashi fries (which we have yet to sample). While their meats are ethically raised, they offer as well a broad selection of dishes to keep vegetarians smiling. Check out their menu and specials at http://victoria.foofood.ca/. In addition to creating mouth-watering curries, noodles and vegetables, Foo does something all businesses should do: they employ friendly, personable employees who greet you when you call ahead with your order. You’ll like the place already when you call.
You will also appreciate that Foo has plenty of parking, because you simply arrive, walk to the window to pick up your order and then leave. Even if you wait five minutes, it’s a pleasant wait. Although they provide a selection of beers and potables for takeout, it’s good to know there’s a small liquor store off the same parking lot.
On returning home, pop your entrees into a microwave on a low setting and shortly you will be feasting. Another plus is that despite very reasonable prices, portions are very generous, so much so that you may even find yourself enjoying Foo a second night in a row!
About the Owner:
So, what’s behind the pickup window at Foo? The website tells us that it is owned by two Canadian world travellers, Sterling Grice and Patrick Lynch. Chef Patrick earned his chops at Le Cordon Bleu in London, before taking positions such as the Australian embassy chef in Phnom Penh. Upon his return in 2009, he launched Foo. If you’re in Calgary, you’ll be glad to know there’s a branch of Foo there too!
Bottom Line:
Unbelievable Asian Foo(d), moderate cost, easy ordering & pickup, plenty of parking.
Well run, friendly. Oh btw, presently a restaurant without seating!
